The Queerness of Becoming: Reading Ruth Through a New Lens

Though many give it short shrift in favor of the Ten Commandments, the Book of Ruth remains one of the most accessible and puzzling stories of the Tanach. While the plot feels at times like a rom-com, Ruth brings up important questions about what it means to become Jewish, the role of sexuality in religious life, and the cost of legacy. In this class, we will take a guided tour of some of the most important episodes of this biblical short story and consider what parts still hold sway today.
